What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
• Lead, plan, manage, and coordinate activities of multi-disciplinary internal and external staff in wildland fire fuel management, prescribed burning, planning, implementation, and strategic planning.
• Coordinate and integrate with other internal and external projects.
• Lead policy research and development of existing services/programs, issue identification, stakeholder consultations, system and financial modelling, impact analysis, and development of options and recommendations.
• Review, analyze, and evaluate existing and proposed legislation, policy, and procedures related to Ontario's natural resources and public safety.
• Provide advice, guidance, and direction on confidential/sensitive material and issues, including interpretation and application of legislation, regulations, policy, agreements, and contracts.
• Lead and participate in prevention/compliance and fuel management/prescribed burning audits.
• Lead and deliver training for Ministry staff and external stakeholders in fuel management and prescribed burning programs.
• Act as a link between the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Branch and Ministry programs, and external groups.
• Coordinate preparation of policy, cabinet submissions, and recommendations for senior management.

• Position requires regular travel to meet with stakeholders or participate in committees and meetings across the province.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

• You have advanced knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices related to wildland fuel management and prescribed burning.
• You have advanced knowledge of wildland fire risk and fire behaviour in order to inform and assess fuel management and prescribed burn plans and prescriptions.
• You have working knowledge of ecosystem, forest, or fuel treatment monitoring, assessment and evaluation methods.

Leadership Skills and Project Management

• You have experience providing leadership in program/policy development, delivery and implementation
• You can lead projects from initial concept through completion within specific timelines
• You can provide project leadership and advice to an assigned team of professionals

Research, Evaluation and Analytical Skills

• You demonstrate sound judgment, sensitivity and a high degree of political acuity
• You can assess the effectiveness of policies/programs against Ministry initiatives and goals
• You can interpret and apply relevant legislation and policy related to wildland fire, forest, and land management.

Relationship Management and Facilitation Skills

• You have expertise in creating and managing complex stakeholder relationships
• You can work collaboratively to resolve issues, negotiate changes and shifts in priorities
• You can lead consultations with stakeholders ensuring a shared understanding

Communication Skills

• You can respond to issues, provide recommendations and prepare reports using standard computer software
• You can create, lead and present briefings on complex issues analysis to senior management
